When I started reading this article I was ready to jump for joy, and then I read on…..
Where it is great to see food manufacturers starting to listen to the people (generally after their sales start to drop, but hey, power to the people!), it’s also disheartening to see that it’s not Australia where it is happening.
This article about Kraft ‘revamping’ their ‘family-friendly’ Macaroni Cheese is good to see – but it’s happening in America and Canada. What about us in Australia? We still have all the crap that’s in the version we have here! And here’s an idea of the crap that’s actually in it (plus a super easy home made version!):
For the two red or ‘avoid’ additives, 554 (Sodium Aluminium Silicate) is an anti-caking agent and contains, among other things, silicone and aluminium! Aluminium is known to cause placental problems in pregnancy and has been linked to Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s, bone diseases, kidney damage and neurotoxicity.
And 106b (Annatto Extracts) is a natural colour so most would assume this is ok! Think again! This colour is linked to behavioural problems, inattention, sleep disturbance and can also raise blood sugar. These are just a few of the side effects.
The yeast extract and hydrolysed vegetable protein, well they are just other names for MSG really!
This is a product that I don’t buy and probably never will, along with a lot of ‘easy meals’. It would be so nice to be able to rely on these sorts of things for those days where we just don’t have time to prepare a proper meal for the family but I just cannot bring myself to knowingly feed this to the ones I love!
Like I said at the beginning of this blog, it’s great to see that manufacturers are starting to listen and yes, they are baby steps (and will still have $$$$$ in mind) but there is still a long way to go and they still have a lot to answer for!
